Blue Moon Pottery - I make handmade pots especially for orchids on the potter's wheel. A few years ago my paying job was in a green house that sold, among other things, orchid pots. Those pots were horrible shades of bubble gum pink, turquoise, and chartreuse and had tacky heart and star cutouts in the sides. I knew I could do better. Woodstream Orchids (WSO) is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2010. WSO is well-known throughout the country for breeding high quality Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums. We operate a 3,500 square-foot production greenhouse in Maryland and have dedicated seedling production labs in Maryland and Pennsylvania, along with contract-growing relationships in California, Hawaii, and the Dominican Republic. Our greenhouse is open to the public for walk-in retail Friday-Sunday, but we ask that you call or e-mail for an appointment to assure we will be there (and not at a show or fishing). WSO has two Open House events at the nursery (mid-January and mid-May [May 15-16, 2010]). The on-line catalog features flasks, seedlings, blooming-size plants and select divisions.

Woodstream Orchids is the largest active producer of seed grown orchid species and hybrids in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia region. We are now one of the largest breeders of Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums in the United States. In February, 2002, Woodstream Orchids entered a joint venture with Papa Aroha Orchids of Coromandel, New Zealand. At the time Paph Aroha was recognized as a world-class hybridizer and grower of high quality and unique Paphiopedilum hybrids and species. We continue to offer seedlings and blooming size plants from the Papa Aroha nursery.

Barry Fraser closed Papa Aroha Orchids in late 2005 to enjoy a retirement of "windsurfing and tramping around the world". Consequently, Woodstream Orchids purchased much of Barry's incredible breeding stock, and thousands of seedlings to perpetuate the tradition of excellence that Barry Fraser created in the area of Paphiopedilum species and complex Paphiopedilum hybrids. We also purchased significant portions of the elite Paphiopedilum species and hybrid breeding stock from Emerson 'Doc' Charles' famous collection and Dr. Jack Vickery's Orchid Thoroughbreds. These acquisitions allow us to bring many exciting offerings to our Paph customers for years to come! WSO is also producing proprietary lines of miniature and compact-growing Phragmipediums (see Bill’s article in the April-June issue of Orchid Digest). Our orchid nursery is located in Huntingtown, in Maryland's beautiful Calvert County, near the Chesapeake Bay, within easy access from Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis. Shore Orchid Festival Lecture Schedule Saturday, July 24 11:00 - Andy's Orchids Mounting and growing mounted orchids 2:00 - Cal-Orchid Sunday, July 25 11:00 - J & L Orchids 2:00 - Silva Orchids Orchid Workshop We are pleased to announce the first annual Shore Orchid Festival to be held here at Silva Orchids on July 23, 24 and 25, 2010. This event will feature twenty orchid vendors, with vendors coming from as far away as Japan. Please be sure to check out our vendor directory below for a complete list of participating sellers. The event will also feature workshops and lectures, covering a wide range of topics for both the novice and the advanced grower/collector. Schedule of lectures is being firmed up, and will be put onto this page in short order. A full line of orchids supplies will be sold at this event. There will be food vendors on site, selling everything from sandwiches, wraps and salads to ice cream and beverages. Chocolatier, Peter Jost will offer mouth watering treats for all. We wish to make this a fun orchid event for everyone, you will be able to shop for orchids, visit with friends, old and new, enjoy good food and fun and have a great summer day or weekend at the Jersey Shore.
